The Elkhart economy has been growing faster than almost any other area of the nation since the Great Recession reached its trough in 2009, but the county still hasn't rebounded to the point where it was before the downturn started in 2007.
South Bend-Mishawaka's economy, on the other hand, has recovered all of the value it lost during the recession and actually boasted a larger gross domestic product in 2012 than it did in 2007. The area's job market, however, hasn't budged from the recession's depths.
The U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis issued updated GDP numbers last month for the nation's metropolitan areas, shedding light on how much local economies have advanced in recent years. GDP represents the value of goods and services produced in a place.
The report shows Michiana has made some progress in bouncing back from the recession.
