Communities directly connected to the Hoosier State passenger rail line have been leading the charge to persuade Gov. Mike Pence that the state should take over funding the $3 million a year route.

Just 11 days prior to the Oct. 1 cutoff of federal funding for Amtrak routes shorter than 750 miles, the Midwest High Speed Rail Association joined the campaign with a visit Thursday to Lafayette’s Amtrak station.

The Chicago-based group that advocates for high-speed rail held a press conference at the Big Four Depot.

“It will come down to what the people of Indiana want, and what they say to the state,” said Christian Ficara, the group’s organizing director. “We want people to be aware, to know about the issue ... to speak up.”
