The state and Amtrak are negotiating the continued operation of the Hoosier State passenger rail service, which runs four days a week between Indianapolis and Chicago, and stops in Lafayette.
The announcement was made in a press release issued Tuesday by the Indiana Department of Transportation.
Effective Oct. 1, the 196-mile Hoosier State and other Amtrak routes shorter than 750 miles will lose federal funding. Seven of the 19 states affected had signed operating agreements with Amtrak as of Sept. 13, according to INDOT.
Amtrak has said it would not terminate service with states holding good-faith contract negotiations by Oct. 1, according to Will Wingfield, INDOT spokesman.
