ELKHART — Officials here say a new $50 million to $60 million health, wellness and aquatics center would help advance efforts to revitalize the area east of downtown and provide a boost to the local economy.

As proposed, the 170,000-square-foot Elkhart Health, Fitness, Aquatics and Community Center would rise on the site of the former downtown Elkhart YMCA and feature:

• A fitness and wellness center.

• A regional aquatics center for competition, recreation and physical therapy.

• Community gathering space.

• Offices for local nonprofit organizations.

Partners in the project include the Community Foundation of St. Joseph County, Beacon Health System, Elkhart Community Schools, the city of Elkhart and various individual and corporate donors.
