SOUTH BEND — Regional Cities of Northern Indiana has allocated an additional $1.8 million in Regional Cities Initiative money for three projects in South Bend and Elkhart, including a climbing gym, technology center and mixed-use hotel project.

The group was awarded $42 million last December for projects that help drive population growth in St. Joseph, Elkhart and Marshall counties by improving quality of life in the region, which is home to more than 500,000 residents.

It previously awarded $38.6 million in Regional Cities money to 15 projects, including mixed-use apartment projects in South Bend and Mishawaka and South Bend Blueways, an effort to improve the trails and parks along the St. Joseph River in South Bend.

Three of those projects have received final approval from the Indiana Economic Development Corp. The others are awaiting approval.

Apex Climbing South Bend would locate in the former College Football Hall of Fame building in downtown South Bend, and the “Technology Training and Demo Center” in the former Studebaker assembly plant, which is being redeveloped into a mixed-use technology center.

The mixed-use hotel project would transform the “500 Building,” formerly “Hotel Elkhart,” in downtown Elkhart into a mixed-use development with retail, commercial, market-rate housing and a boutique hotel.
