As expected, the Vincennes University board of trustees Wednesday approved a 3.8-percent tuition ad fee increase for the 2011-12 and 2012-13 school years.
Even with the increase, officials say VU remains the cheapest residential university in Indiana.
Mike Sievers, chairman of the Finance and Revenue Committee, said the increase was necessary because VU will not receive an increase in funding from the state for the next two years.
“I feel like Vincennes University is one of the most economical educational facilities in the state as far as the cost of education and though no one’s happy about an increase, I feel like we have to be prudent and recognize that we also want to be able to provide adequate compensation to our staff, not only the faculty, but all the support staff,” Sievers said.
The decision will raise tuition by $171 or the upcoming school year and by $177 next year. It will cost $4,705 to attend VU for the upcoming year and $4,882 for the 2012-13 school year.
The increase will be split into 2.8 percent for tuition costs and 1 percent for repair and rehabilitation projects, Sievers said. The board also approved the university’s budget to reflect the 3.8-percent tuition and fee increase Wednesday.
The increase was the third lowest tuition and fee increase for Indiana’s state universities this year, behind only Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana in Terre Haute and Indiana State University.
Board members in April approved a recommendation by the Finance and Revenue Committee to increase the room and board fees by 3 percent, raising the fee to $7,838 per year. For students living on campus it will cost $12,544 to attend VU for 2011-12.
