Ellettsville-based telecommunications company Smithville Digital is cutting 45 full-time positions as its landline telephone business wanes and it pivots deeper into providing services including broadband Internet and television, company officials said Monday.
Employees learned of the layoffs Monday. Some lost their jobs immediately, while the company is asking others to stay in their positions for a short time.
The privately owned telecommunications provider did not say exactly how many workers it will have after the cuts, noting only that it will employ more than 140. Smithville said it will sponsor support programs for laid-off employees but did not offer any additional details on those programs.
