About 50 hourly employees at Indiana University will no longer be employed by the institution and will have to become workers with a designated temp agency if they want to continue to work on campus.
The move is, in part, a way for IU to avoid potentially having to provide health insurance to hourly employees of its physical plant department if the Affordable Care Act moves forward as anticipated in 2014.
IU has contracted with Manpower, an international agency for temporary workers with an office in Columbus, to hire about 50 maintenance and custodial personnel from IU after Sept. 28. The university will pay the agency an administrative fee to manage the workforce.
