ANDERSON — A new company that will fabricate and assemble air freight containers has chosen Anderson for its new production facility.

Impact Container Inc. is expected to create 175 jobs over four years and invest $1 million in manufacturing and production equipment, according to a city news release.

The company will lease space at 1735 West 53rd St. as it begins startup operations.

Impact Container is owned by Michael Bartrom, a Marion entrepreneur who also owns Computer Age Engineering, a manufacturing engineering company he founded in 1985.

Impact Container has the exclusive rights to a patented composite material developed by a U.S. aerospace company and is expected to begin operations over the next several months, officials said.

The new composite is significantly lighter and stronger than material currently used for freight containers.

The lighter weight containers will increase the payload capacity of air-freight carriers and reduce fuel costs. In addition, added strength will prolong the life of these assets.

“Anderson is proud to announce the addition of Impact Container Inc. to the family of Anderson businesses,” Mayor Kevin Smith said in the news release. “Impact Container builds an innovative product, and Anderson has the employees to make them successful.”

The city will provide Impact Container with a loan of $200,000 from the job incentive portion of the 2012 food and beverage budget; however, the company will have to meet the employment and investment targets, which include incremental yearly requirements.

In addition, under terms of a project development agreement, the city and Impact Container have agreed to a long-term lease in a new manufacturing facility to be built in the city’s Community Revitalization Enhancement District.

“Impact Container has all the successful qualifications for a startup manufacturing operation: exclusivity with their supply chain, a government-certified product, a first product order with a major customer and proven technical leadership and management,” Interim Economic Development Director, Greg Winkler, said in the news release.
