ANDERSON - As a $5 million budget deficit looms, officials from the Anderson Community School Corporation are trimming fat from the administration and rearranging staff to make up for recently announced retirements.

ACS Superintendent Mikella Lowe recently announced that three positions will be eliminated from the school district's administrative team.

When Food Services Director Larry Muckenhirn retires at the end of the summer, his wife, who now serves as assistant food services director, will take his place.

The assistant's position held by LeAnna Muckenhirn will not be filled, Lowe said.

The district will also do away with the director of community development position currently held by Jo Dean Washington.

As ACS prepares to close Robinson and Southview elementary schools along with Ebbertt Education Center and South Side Middle School, the facilities department will become essential, but it too will lose personnel.

Lowe said the assistant director of facilities position currently held by Dave Crum will be eliminated once the school closings and district reorganization process is complete.

Others will leave the administration via retirement, and Lowe has already begun plans to replace exiting staffers.

The Herald Bulletin was unable to obtain cost savings estimates resulting from the job cuts and restructuring at press time Wednesday.
