Cummins Inc. on Monday began removing some of its tooling from Columbus Components Group because of the uncertainty surrounding the company.

CCG laid off 123 employees April 9 and in Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification letters sent to state officials has mentioned possibly closing.

"Cummins is supporting CCG as a valuable supplier and is working closely with the company as it works through the recession," said Mark Land, executive director of corporate communications. "At the same time, Cummins is taking steps to mitigate its risk associated with Cummins' tooling and the uncertainty of the business."

Some of Cummins' tooling is being moved to a storage location as a precaution. The transfer is expected to be completed this week, Land said.

Also, the moving of tooling will not affect Cummins' current level of business with CCG, Land said. "We continue to place orders with CCG and will make the tooling available to fill those orders available as necessary," Land said.

Jerry Wagner, business manager of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 1424, said CCG still is performing jobs for Cummins, and that Cummins was removing dies that are periodically used to make parts.
