Monroe County can consider the option of instituting a 1 percent food and beverage tax, if legislation passed late Wednesday by the Indiana General Assembly gets Gov. Mitch Daniels' signature.

The language permitting consideration of local option taxes in Monroe County, Martinsville, Fort Wayne and Vanderburgh County was amended into House Enrolled Act 1514, the final bill passed as the Legislature's regular session concluded just before midnight. The bill, primarily focused on public accountability audits desired by Indiana's attorney general, passed the Senate by a 47-3 vote and the House, 62-35.
