MUNCIE -- As part of Mayor Sharon McShurley's continuing efforts to save money, city firefighters are no longer being sent on all of the "first responder" calls for medical attention.

Jan Kornilow, medical director of the Delaware County Emergency Medical Service, said a protocol had been established that will result in firefighters being sent out only on the most serious medical calls, including those involving unconscious patients and heart attacks.

"What we are trying to do is help the dispatcher make the appropriate response," said Kornilow, also EMS director at Ball Memorial Hospital.
