South Bend Common Council members approved local income tax increases during a Monday meeting that went late into the night.

Three resolutions, which together raise local income taxes by .95 percent, were each approved on a 6-2 vote.

Council members Henry Davis, D-2nd, and David Varner, R-5th, voted against the increases. Council member Tom LaFountain, D-3rd, was not at the meeting.

The city has lost about $22.7 million in property tax revenue, according to Mayor Stephen Luecke. That's a 27 percent drop from the year before because of state-enacted property tax cuts.
