SOUTH BEND - City employees have received a letter asking them to volunteer for a 32-hour workweek next year in an effort to cut costs.
City code enforcement staff, except for supervisors, will have no choice in the matter.
Code enforcement's nine inspectors and four office staff will make the switch to four-day workweeks Jan. 1, said code enforcement director Catherine Toppel. The move, combined with eliminating a part-time summer filing position and implementing a 5 percent pay cut for Toppel and her four supervisors, will save about $114,500 next year, Toppel said.
