Wiping away a new $500 fee for incoming Purdue University students could divert a potential showdown between the school and lawmakers, said a state senator whose district includes the West Lafayette campus.
"I still think the $500 fee is a huge issue with many, many of my colleagues," said state Sen. Ron Alting, a Lafayette Republican. "I think that is the general thinking of the majority of members of the General Assembly."
Last week Purdue President France Córdova and other officials faced stern questions and comments from the State Budget Committee about increased education expenses. They were asked to reconsider tuition and fees set in July.
To further explain why trustees approved a 5 percent tuition increase in each of the next two years for in-state students, and the additional $500 tuition bump for first-time students, Purdue officials will meet privately with lawmakers and their staffs this week.
