The fact the Indiana General Assembly passed the budget bill so late, which delayed state universities finishing their own budgets, meant that tuition and fees were not approved by university trustees until several months later than usual.
That, in turn, means that there is scant chance of persuading state universities to reduce fee hikes. Not with school about to start.
Nevertheless, we appreciate state Sen. Luke Kenley, R-Noblesville, taking up the issue last month and making the call. The universities were required to defend their decisions before the General Assembly's Senate Budget Committee and its miffed chairman.
