Fifty hourly and salaried employees were laid off from Ameristar Casino and Hotel in East Chicago, the company confirmed Friday.

"In the face of a continued struggling economy, the Cline Avenue bridge closure, and increased competition in the market, we regrettably had to reduce the number of team members employed at Ameristar East Chicago," said Pete Savage, senior vice president and general manager, in a statement to The Times.

Savage added that currently, there are no further involuntary staff reductions planned at the venues.

"As a company, we remain firmly committed to the city of East Chicago, the state of Indiana, and to our most valuable asset, which are the 1,300 plus team members who help make Ameristar a great place to work and to visit," Savage said. "With that being said, in the face of the difficulties faced, our corporate team, executive team and team leaders remain equally committed to overcoming these challenges and growing our business."
