Purdue limits hiring, focuses on energy conservation to save $10 million

Purdue University is pulling back on its hiring and focusing on energy conservation to save $10 million this year.

All future hires would be evaluated and prioritized as part of a plan to deal with an immediate cut in state funding and an impending internal deficit, officials said during a campuswide forum Monday.

"If you've got to generate cash quickly, in a people-intensive business like higher education, the only way to do it is to reduce the work force or restrict the hiring," said Randy Woodson, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs.
