An Indiana State Police memorandum dated Monday urged troopers to enforce a statute prohibiting drivers from tossing lit cigarettes and other burning materials from a moving car in light of the drought that spans much of the country.
As unusually dry conditions parch much of the state, the memo from ISP Superintendent Paul Whitesell reminded troopers that state law allows the agency to cite drivers who throw burning materials from a moving vehicle in order to cut down on fires started from people disposing of smoking materials.
