Indiana authorities are putting out a call to heavy water users in Elkhart County and 31 other counties to voluntarily cut back on their water use in light of dry conditions.

The call from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and the Indiana Department of Homeland Security is directed at facilities with the capacity of withdrawing 100,000 gallons or more of water per day. Letters were being prepared Friday to go out to the facilities.

“Because of the potential for long-term drought and heightened fire danger, the notification letters identify the current condition in the affected 32 counties as warning level,” said a press release from the Indiana Department of Homeland Security. “The rest of the state is under watch conditions.”
