As local cases of COVID-19 continue to increase, hospitalizations are also increasing.
Brian Shockney, IU Health South Central Region president, said hospitalizations have tripled since July 6 during a weekly news conference on Friday with Monroe County, Bloomington and Indiana University representatives. That day, IU Health Bloomington had five patients. By July 13, there were 15 cases.
Since June 16, the number of COVID-19 tests administered for IU Health employees have also doubled, Shockney said.
Friday, Monroe County saw 17 new cases, bringing its cumulative total to 417. While people of all ages have been diagnosed with COVID-19 in Monroe County, the largest demographic is people between 20 and 29 years old, with 30.5% of positive cases in the county coming from that age group. Shockney noted that increase, and said that specific age range does not see many hospitalizations associated with COVID-19.
Across the state, 11.2% of ICU beds were being used for COVID-19 cases, and 34.4% of beds were available. About 2.7% of ventilators across the state were also being used for COVID-19, with 83.2% still available.
