SJC Industries Inc. will close its Elkhart facility and permanently lay off 165 workers after selling its assets to to a subsidiary of Orlando, Fla.-based Allied Specialty Vehicles.

SJC Industries, a subsidiary of Elkhart-based Thor Industries, notified the state Department of Workforce Development of the layoffs in a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act letter dated May 7. The day before, ASV subsidiary Wheeled Coach Industries Inc. announced it had acquired substantially all of SJC Industries' assets.

SJC Industries makes ambulances under the Marque and McCoy Miller brands. In its WARN Act letter, SJC Industries said the closure of its 25161 Leer Drive facility won't affect its Goshen Coach Inc. bus manufacturing operations or employees.

In its WARN Act letter, SJC Industries said employees will be laid off beginning July 8. Some employees may be kept until the ambulance maker is able to complete a backlog of orders.

SJC Industries workers aren't represented by a union.

Allied Speciality Vehicles makes fire, emergency, recreational and commercial vehicles. It owns Fleetwood RV and Gold Shield in Decatur, and last week announced it had acquired most of the assets of Navistar International Corp.'s RV business, which includes the Monaco RV and R-Vision brands.

Monaco RV motor-home production will be moved from Wakarusa to Decatur later this year.
