In its first report on statewide gambling activity that includes the racinos here and in Shelbyville, the Indiana Gaming Commission said wagers last month at Hoosier Park and Indiana Live totaled nearly $311 million.
The figure does not reflect the true amount of money bet at the two sites, because a single dollar can be counted as a wager multiple times. For example, a gambler who puts a $100 voucher into a machine, loses $5 and then puts $95 into a second machine would create a so-called coin in amount of $195, which is how the gambling industry measures slots activity.
Hoosier Park officially opened its gaming floor on June 2 and accounted for 61 percent of Indiana's June racino bets. Indiana Downs, which opened June 9, reported the remaining $122 million wagered on slots machines.
Both venues showed payouts of about 92 percent with Hoosier Park returning almost $174 million to gamblers' pockets.
Jim Brown, Hoosier Park's general manager for gaming, said a rough estimate of attendance showed more than 200,000 people visited the casino and adjoining horse track during June.
"We're really excited about our first full month of operations," he said. "We expect that our business levels will remain steady or increase as the year goes on."
Hoosier Park's first month of activity showed that low-denomination games remain popular with patrons, Brown said, and as the year continues, Hoosier Park will adjust its offering of games in order to match demand.
Hoosier Park's roughly 500 penny slot machines collected nearly $32.5 million in June, or 3.25 billion single-cent bets.
The largest source of slots revenue was the 503 quarter slot machines, which averaged $90,286 in bets for the month. The average slot machine at Hoosier Park in June collected $3,215 in wagers every day of the month.
Hoosier Park paid $3.9 million in taxes to the state for its June adjusted gross revenue of $15.7 million, a figure close to the amount of wagers kept by the racino.
Indiana's 13 casinos generated about $78.6 million in tax revenue for the state last month, a decline of nearly $3 million compared to last June despite the $6.5 million contributed by the two racinos.
The average slot machine at Hoosier Park takes in $3,215 every day.
