DeKalb County’s unemployment rate dropped for the fourth consecutive month in October and to its lowest point since 2008.

The rate fell to 10.2 percent in October from 10.6 percent in September. It stood at 12.1 percent in October 2009.

The state estimated that 18,527 DeKalb County residents had jobs in October, with 2,109 people unemployed.

“The unemployment rate improving is a combination of the economy getting better, retaining existing businesses and getting new businesses to expand in the county and in the region,” said Ken McCrory, director of the DeKalb County Economic Development Partnership.

November 2008 was the last time the unemployment rate reached current levels. The rate has dropped steadily since July 2009, when it reached a high of 13.8 percent.

DeKalb County is tied with Steuben County at 10.2 percent for the lowest unemployment in northeast Indiana. LaGrange County is at 10.4 percent and Noble County’s rate is 11.2 percent, respectively.
