In October, Elkhart County posted a slight dip in unemployment while the cities of Elkhart and Goshen both recorded increases.

The Indiana Department of Workforce Development released today the October jobless rates. Overall, Indiana added 7,600 private sector jobs and dropped its jobless rate to 9.2 percent from 9.5 percent in September. The sectors showing the most significant employment gains were the professional and business services with 4,500 new jobs and construction with 1,900 new hires.

Elkhart County only saw a modest drop to 12.9 percent, practically the same as September' 13.0 percent. However, the October rate is an improvement from 15.7 percent reported in October 2009.

The number of residents out of work rose to 15.1 percent in the city of Elkhart during October from 14.9 percent in September. Likewise, the city of Goshen has 13.8 percent of its community out of work compared to 13.2 percent a month earlier.
