DANVILLE — The town council here is considering consolidation with the Center Township trustee and board.
During its Monday meeting, the council passed a resolution to establish a reorganization committee. The Center Township Board must approve the resolution before such a committee can be formed. If they don't, Danville Town Manager Gary Eakin said there are other options, such as a petition.
But if Center Township does approve, a reorganization committee would be formed to study possible consolidation. Eakin said the purpose of a study, which could take up to a year, is to "recognize any efficiencies. The study dictates whether or not it's a good idea to do this."
He added that no one from the town is necessarily expecting Center Township representatives to give up their positions. Consolidation could mean expanding the town council.
Once something is approved by both sides, it would become a referendum for citizens to vote on.
Eliminating township government has been a hot topic on the state level. Eakin said he doesn't know if Gov. Mitch Daniels is still looking to get rid of township assessor positions.
"From what I've read and heard, he is lobbying very heavily to get a Republican legislature so he can accomplish some things in his last year," he said. "This is one of them."
There's already a push for consolidation between Plainfield and Guilford Township, with Brownsburg and Lincoln Township considering the same.
