MUNCIE -- Public safety could be further eroded, law officials fear, following today's suspension of Muncie police reserves.

A provision of the labor contract between the city and Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 87 prohibits any reserve officer from working if one or more regular officers are laid off. And since today is the last day for five rookie police officers, Police Chief Deborah Davis informed reserve officers this week their services cannot be used until further notice.
