A troubling trend is emerging in the discussion over the implementation of a local option income tax. Some proponents are seeking not just to maintain the present status quo in terms of Muncie police and fire numbers, but rather to rehire at least some furloughed police officers and firefighters.
Local city and county officials are focused on stopgap measures instead of looking for long-term and innovative solutions. While it's understandable, it's also short sighted.
