Dexter Axle to close Elkhart plant in July, cut 92 jobs

Dexter Axle will close its Elkhart axle assembly plant in July, cutting the jobs of 92 workers.

The company is a supplier of axles, frames and other components to the utility trailer, recreational vehicle and manufactured housing markets. It has a couple of plants in Elkhart employing a total of 476.

Production will move from Elkhart into facilities in Albion and Fremont when expansions at those two plants are finished. The consolidation is needed, the company stated in a press release, to reduce costs in a slowing economy.

Dexter Axle was founded in 1960 and is now a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tomkins PLC.
