Prudent budgeting, escalating enrollment and tuition increases have helped IPFW weather the financial storm that has hurt many Indiana universities, Chancellor Michael Wartell told a crowded auditorium full of new and returning faculty and staff on the first day of classes Monday.

Wartell said enrollment increased 8.7 percent this fall, bringing the number of students to 13,061. Full-time enrollment increased 11.4 percent to 8,545, and part-time enrollment increased 4 percent to 4,516. Minority enrollment increased 21 percent.
