MUNCIE -- Grown-ups aren't supposed to be afraid of the dark. But the possibility that most of Muncie's streetlights might be turned off due to budget problems has some local business owners and economic development officials scared.

Being known as "the city that turned off its streetlights" would be disastrous from a business and economic development perspective, said Roy Budd, executive director of the multi-county agency Energize-ECI.

"I cannot get business investors to come here if we're not going to invest in ourselves," Budd said.
