The fight to keep open elementary schools in Huntington County came to a head Monday night, with two schools getting the ax.
The Huntington County Community School Corporation School Board voted 4-3 to shut down Horace Mann Elementary School and Salamonie Middle School, effective at the end of the school year.
Troy Smart made a six part motion that included the closure of both schools and Thomas King seconded the motion. Smart proposed that the board close Horace Mann, move the students from Salamonie Middle School to Riverview, cut the extracurricular budget by $100,000, reduce administrative costs by $300,000, increase classified personnel insurance premiums 5 percent in 2012 and 10 percent in 2013, and move the school corporation’s administrative offices to Horace Mann by July 1.
